چکیده

A new measurement has been investigated, called the collision threshold pressure (CTP), meaning the minimal pressure required to initiate vocal fold collision. The purpose was to find a measurement that would be more accurate and less time-consuming to collect than the presently used phonation threshold pressure (PTP). Fourteen amateur singers – six female and eight male – were measured using an electroglottograph (EGG) and a pressure transducer that the subjects held in the corner of their mouths. The EGG showed if the vocal folds collide. All subjects were measured at several pitches before and after vocal warm-up. Both CTP and PTP tended to be higher before vocal warm-up. In addition, the differences varied greatly both within and between subjects. A clear result was that the CTP analysis demanded less time than the PTP analysis. The standard deviation of the PTP values collected here were smaller than those published in a previous investigation. Moreover, the standard deviations for CTP and PTP were compared in two subjects and were found to be lower for CTP. Thus, CTP may be a more useful measurement of vocal fold characteristics than PTP.

Threshold Pressure For Vocal Fold Collision

Phonation threshold pressure (PTP) is frequently used for characterizing vocal fold vibration properties. However, because of the very low pressures, it is often difficult to measure PTP with acceptable accuracy. This investigation analyses an alternative pressure, the collision threshold pressure (CTP), defined as the lowest pressure required to initiate vocal fold collision. Fourteen amateur ...

Collision and phonation threshold pressures before and after loud, prolonged vocalization in trained and untrained voices.

The phonation threshold pressure (PTP) is defined as the lowest subglottal pressure needed for obtaining and sustaining vocal fold oscillation. It has been found to increase during vocal fatigue. In the present study, PTP is measured together with the threshold pressure needed for vocal fold collision; henceforth, the collision threshold pressure (CTP). PTP and CTP are compared before and after...

Effects of vocal loading on the phonation and collision threshold pressures

Phonation threshold pressures (PTP) have been commonly used for obtaining a quantitative measure of vocal fold motility. However, as these measures are quite low, it is typically difficult to obtain reliable data. As the amplitude of an electroglottograph (EGG) signal decreases substantially at the loss of vocal fold contact, it is mostly easy to determine the collision threshold pressure (CTP)...

The physics of small-amplitude oscillation of the vocal folds.

A theory of vocal fold oscillation is developed on the basis of the body-cover hypothesis. The cover is represented by a distributed surface layer that can propagate a mucosal surface wave. Linearization of the surface-wave displacement and velocity, and further small-amplitude approximations, yields closed-form expressions for conditions of oscillation. The theory predicts that the lung pressu...

Alternative Measures of Phonation: Collision Threshold Pressure & Electroglottographic Spectral Tilt. Extra: Perception of Swedish Accents

The collision threshold pressure (CTP), i.e. the smallest amount of subglottal pressure needed for vocal fold collision, has been explored as a possible complement or alternative to the now commonly used phonation threshold pressure (PTP), i.e. the smallest amount of subglottal pressure needed to initiate and sustain vocal fold oscillation. In addition, the effects of vocal warmup (Paper 1) and...
